Loved ones with addictions

If a family member or loved one is an alcoholic or drug addict this can be very frustrating. There will be times you probably just want to walk away and not give that person any kind of empathy. This is understandable but if you don't do it then who will. The substance abuse facility in your local area is willing to offer their assistance but need your help to get your loved one in for observation and therapy.
. Every drug addict thinks that they will be able to stop using and abusing alcohol or drugs when they want to but that is definitely not the case. Taking your loved one to a rehab program is not an easy task because they may be unwilling to go or think that they are really not ready to do so. You have to be vigilant in your pursuit to get them into treatment. In some cases it may call for intervention and the addict does not like to be put in a corner. It may be necessary to do so if you want your loved one to live.
The rehabilitation and healing process entails detoxification of a person's body and physical condition. It also involves medical attention because the addict has not been taking care of their bodies and they can go into treatment with all kinds of medical issues.
So the body has to be cleared of all the toxins that accumulated over the years. The withdrawal process during detox can be a difficult but necessary one. It may take a few days for this to completely take effect. In the process the addict may feel nauseous sick and downright awful. This is the time when they think of leaving the substance abuse facility once and for all. If they can get through detox then the remainder of their stay can be quite fulfilling and rewarding.
There are a lot of family members that have been enablers to the addict. They provide the addict with all the resources that they need. They think that they are helping the person but this is only dragging them deeper and deeper into their addiction because they have found a person and place to fund their habit.
At the substance abuse facility they are taught how to identify this weakness and how to deal with it. This is why family therapy is also important so that the enabler can understand the extent of their hand in the problem. They will be able to see how they were only making it worse for their loved one when they thought they were doing something good.
Knowledge and information about addiction is available but not many people look into it unless they have someone closely connected to them being affected by it. It would be good if people would learn about addiction before it happens so that when it does happen they are ready to do what it takes to get help for those who look to them most.
